Usually depreciation — the value the car loses while you own it. It doesn't show up as a bill, so it's easy to ignore, but it's often the single largest cost of ownership, especially in the first few years of a new car. This calculator captures it by comparing your purchase price to the resale value at the end, so the 'invisible' cost becomes visible alongside fuel, insurance, and upkeep.
It still matters, but differently. If you truly drive a car until it's worthless, the depreciation is simply the full purchase price spread over its whole life — so the per-year cost is low if the life is long. If you'll sell or trade it, the resale value offsets part of the cost. Either way, counting depreciation gives a truer picture than looking at fuel and insurance alone.
A ready-to-use spreadsheet (Excel & Google Sheets): true monthly and yearly cost of ownership including depreciation and running costs, with a side-by-side comparison of multiple cars — delivered instantly after checkout. AI-assisted, human-built; not financial advice.
