Questions

What's the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit as a percentage of your cost; margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. A product that costs $60 and sells for $90 has a 50% markup ($30 on $60) but only a 33% margin ($30 on $90). They describe the same profit from different bases, and confusing them is a costly, common pricing mistake.

How do I convert markup to margin?

Margin equals markup divided by (1 plus markup). So a 50% markup is 0.5 divided by 1.5, which is about 33% margin. Going the other way, markup equals margin divided by (1 minus margin). This calculator does the conversion for you so you never mix them up.
